Kailey Murdock

Doula

“Overnight, I became a single mom of three. My business became the way I could support us.”

When I first started my business, I had just taken my DONA classes and had no clue what to do next. I stumbled across the Birthworker Podcast and fell in love with it. At the time, I had zero income, zero clients, zero followers, and I didn’t even know what an email list was or why it mattered. I didn’t know how to build a website or run a business, and on top of that, my personal life turned upside down. Overnight, I became a single mom to three kids. My mental health was low, but I knew I had to make this business work to support my family.

Fast forward a year, and the growth has been incredible. I streamlined my admin tasks, started sending out weekly newsletters, and built a website I’m really proud of. I got my DONA certification, launched placenta encapsulation services, grew my email list, created freebies, and even started working on my first ebook. I completed Doula Jumpstart and Doulapreneur, and I’m halfway through the CBE program. Oh, and I discovered Airtable and now I’m obsessed!

The wins have been steady and meaningful. I booked five placenta clients just since May, raised my prices to reflect my worth, and grew my business income from $200 last year to over $2,000 this year. I’ve also seen huge progress in my copywriting. I don’t overthink it anymore, and I can actually sit down and get it done without stressing.

Of course, one of my biggest struggles was figuring out how to be a doula while also being a single mom. Placenta encapsulation has been a huge help in creating income without always being on call. And once I launch my ebook, I’ll be moving full speed into creating an online course, which is another way to keep serving families while balancing life with my kids.

This past year, my mental health has improved dramatically. Getting my DONA certification felt like tangible proof that I didn’t give up, that I persevered through everything life threw at me. Looking back, I’m proud of the strength it took to keep going, and I’m excited to see what I’ll say a year from now when I look back again.

Looking forward, I’m planning to launch my ebook of affirmations and journal prompts for pregnancy, build my hospital birth course with a freebie and funnel, continue growing my in-person clientele, and even start hosting in-person classes. I know now that I can handle hard things, and that my business will keep growing because of it.
